A second catalytic metal ion in a group I ribozyme
Article Abstract:
All naturally occurring RNA enzymes need metal ions to stabilize their structure. Several divalent metals can provide structural roles in the self-splicing group I intron from Tetrahymena thermophila, although only Mg squared + and Mn squared + can promote splice-site cleavage and exon ligation. The first metal ion with a significant role in catalysis was revealed in a study of a ribozyme reaction analogous to 5-splice-site cleavage by guanosine.

RNA finds a simpler way
Article Abstract:
A bacterial gene regulation system with a twist to repress gene activity is described. The repressor is not a protein, but instead is a switchable self-cleavage element within the mRNA involving an RNA molecule with enzymatic activity.
