A specific neural substrate for perceiving facial expressions of disgust
Article Abstract:
Pictures showing strong and mild expressions of disgust have been found to activate anterior insular cortex but not the amygdala. Structures connected to a limbic cortico-striatal-thalamic circuit were also activated by pictures showing strong disgust. This research has shown for the first time that there are differences between the neural responses to facial expressions showing fear and disgust. It seems that perception of others' disgust and that of taste have a similar neural substrate.

Menstrual cycle alters face preference
Article Abstract:
Female preference for secondary sexual traits in male face shape changes with the probability of conception across the menstrual cycle. Women tend to prefer male faces that are less feminized during the high-conception-risk phase than in the low-conception-risk phase. For a short-term sexual relationship, the preferred face shape is less feminine during the high-conception-risk phase, while preferences remain constant when women judge attractiveness for a long-term relationship.

Effects of sexual dimorphism on facial attractiveness
Article Abstract:
Females of many species prefer exaggerated male characteristics, but new research shows that feminizing the shape of both female and male human faces makes them more attractive to the opposite sex. Feminized male faces are particularly regarded as 'better parents'. It is surmised that such preferences may have contributed to limiting human sexual dimorphism and encouraging neoteny.
