A thermodynamic explanation for black smoker temperatures
Article Abstract:
The internal temperature structure of convection cells in a porous medium was examined. It was shown that plumes of pure water form naturally at pressures appropriate to seafloor crust. Higher temperatures were confined to a boundary layer where flow is horizontal. The model predicts that high-temperature reaction zones occur in ophiolites.
