A tripeptide 'anticodon' deciphers stop codons in messenger RNA
Article Abstract:
It has been possible to establish how the translational release factors of prokaryotes, RF1 and RF2, read both non-identical and identical stop codons. The discriminator tripeptide of bacterial release factors was found to be functionally equivalent to that of the anticodon of transfer RNA, regardless of the difference between protein and RNA. The identification of the discriminator tripeptide strongly indicates that release factors recognize stop codons directly rather than indirectly through the interplay of stop codons and rRNA sequences.
