A vanishing ecosystem
Article Abstract:
Evidence suggests that the disappearance of prairie habitats is harming biodiversity, with 55 grassland animals and plants listed as endangered or threatened in the US. Among the most endangered species are grassland birds. To redress the problem, the Fish and Wildlife Service has established the Northern Tallgrass Prairie Habitat Preservation Area, covering 77,000 acres and encompassing 85 counties in northwestern Iowa and western Minnesota. It is hoped that the integrated ecosystem approach will help restore some native tallgrass prairie habitats.

The need for predator management in conservation of some vulnerable species
Article Abstract:
Public understanding of predator management is poor and there is little understanding of why it is necessary to manage predators of endangered and rare species. Changes in landscape, such as habitat fragmentation, have increased predation rates far above natural levels, with small populations unable to sustain survival and productivity without predation control. There is an urgent need for wildlife professionals to educate the public about this controversial and complex issue.
