AZA Taxon Advisory Group Profile: bats
Article Abstract:
The Bat AZA Taxon Advisory Group, established in 1991, is attempting bat conservation through different strategies such as research and educating the public. A survey of 128 North American zoos in 1991 shows that 56 of these house 22 bat species. The Rodrigues and Pemba Island fruit bats have been enlisted under endangered species. The goal of the Taxon Advisory Group is to support conservation of bats in nature rather than replace it. The group transfers knowledge through its subcommittees such as the Nutrition, Reproduction, Zookeeper and Education subcommittees.

AZA Taxon Advisory Group, profile: felids
Article Abstract:
The American Zoo and Aquarium Association (AZA) has set up Taxon Advisory Groups (TAGs) to seek to achieve genetic diversity among wildlife, and the Felid TAG was set up in 1991. The AZA has cooperated with the Ralston Purina Company which has set up a Big Cat Survival Fund that has helped with a number of projects. These projects include a breeding program in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Smaller cats tend to have less space allocated in zoos than larger cats, and the Felid TAG is seeking to assess which species of small cats should receive most attention.

Partnership to protect endangered bats
Article Abstract:
Bat Conservation International, in cooperation with government agencies and other conservation organizations, launched an initiative to protect a major winter bat hibernaculum in a graphite mine in the Adirondack Mountains in New York. Steel gates were installed at the mine's openings to prevent unauthorized entry and protect the bat population. International Paper, which owns the graphite mine, contributed time and resources to the project.
