Activation of the transcription factor Gli1 and the Sonic hedgehog signalling pathway in skin tumours
Article Abstract:
Sporadic basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is a common malignant cancer. Overexpression of Sonic hedgehog (Shh) is shown to induce BCCs in mice. The ectopic expression of the zinc-finger transcription factor Gli1 in an embryonic frog epidermis, is shown to lead to the development of tumours expressing endogenous Gli1. It indicates that loss of Patched (Ptc) or overexpression of Shh is not the only cause of Gli1 induction and sporadic BCC formation.

ovo/svb integrates Wingless and DER pathways to control epidermis differentiation
Article Abstract:
The expression of the ovo/svb gene is found to control the choice between cell fates. Svb is found to be key selector gene that directs cytoskeletal modifications producing the denticle. Denticle formation is promoted by the DER pathway, through activation of svb expression. Wingless promotes the smooth cell fate via a transcriptional repression of svb by Armadillo/dTcf.

Two nuclear signalling pathways for vitamin D
Article Abstract:
Two distinct nuclear signalling pathways for vitamin D are activated respectively by the vitamin D receptor alone or in conjunction with the receptor's heterodimers and the retinoid-X receptor-alpha. An analysis of both Drosophila and mammalian cells was used to obtain these results that support the existence of two vitamin D response element classes.
