Active cycling of organic carbon in the central Arctic Ocean
Article Abstract:
The Arctic Ocean has active biological communities which contribute importantly to the organic carbon cycle through dissolved and particulate pools. Research vessels measured organic carbon standing-stakes, biological production, and biomass. Bacterial production rates in the shelf and slopes are comparable to those in the open and ice-covered regions. The low phytoplankton release of dissolved organic carbon in Chukchi Sea increases substantially in the Canadian basin and finally decreases gradually in the Nansen basin.

Distribution and cycling of terrigenous dissolved organic matter in the ocean
Article Abstract:
Rivers continuously discharge terrigenous dissolved organic matter (DOM) into the oceans, but its distribution and cycling within ocean basins remains unclear, although there is evidence of DOM in surface waters of the Pacific Ocean's eastern equatorial area. New research reveals low levels of lignin, found only in land vegetation, in DOM harvested from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, indicating its presence throughout the ocean water column. The observations are consistent with known patterns of oceanic circulation.

Chemical composition of dissolved organic nitrogen in the ocean
Article Abstract:
Fixed nitrogen is a limiting nutrient for primary production in the ocean. Inorganic nitrogen concentrations are low in temperate surface waters. Organic commpounds represent a small fraction of total dissolved organic nitrogen (DON). NMR measurements have been shown that the majority of higher-molecular-weight DON in the ocean is in amide form rather than a collective of nitrogen heterocycles.
