Adapting to change in Latin America
Article Abstract:
Latin America's universities and its scientific community face significant challenges as the region undergoes wide-reaching political and economic change. It is possible that economic pressure will affect links between science and society, and the scientific community must be prepared to derive maximum benefit from this shift. Care must be taken to seize opportunities to improve the quality of science produced in Latin America.

The greening of America
Article Abstract:
Golf course developers have begun to take the environmental consequences of their actions into consideration due to pressure from conservation groups. Golf courses use huge amounts of water and pesticides and significantly alter the ecosystems they infringe upon. The United States Golf Assn has begun to take these concerns seriously, but still tends to deny that courses have a detrimental effect on wildlife.

Greening the deserts?
Article Abstract:
The retired American cell biologist, Gordon Sato, plans to plant mangrove along the coastlines of the deserts in order to increase the fisheries and marine food production that have their own advantages. However, it has been proven by ecological studies, that mangroves prosper in salt water while they grow poorly in areas of low rainfall.
