The great white whales
Article Abstract:
Belugas, or white whales, are not on the endangered species list, but there is mounting concern that they need more protection than they are receiving. Around 65,000 belugas live in arctic waters near Canada, Greenland and Alaska. The most threatened group live in the St. Lawrence estuary, and are falling victim to toxic pollutants released into the water. The International Whaling Commission has no authority over belugas, but is trying to reduce the number that are killed each year. Most beluga-hunting is done by Inuits in Canada, who were living off the meat and by-products of belugas long before toxic chemicals existed.

The poverty/conservation equation
Article Abstract:
The town of Sanchez at the mouth of the Dominican Republic's Samana Bay is the largest estuary in the Caribbean and the most important sanctuary for humpback whales from the North Atlantic. However, deforestation in the highlands upriver has washed tons of topsoil and silt into the bay, resulting in a dwindling number of shrimp and fish that ultimately affects hundreds of fishing families living in the region

Trees make a great target
