Advent of a new family
Article Abstract:
The inward rectifiers, a major group of potassium channels, come from a different, distantly related family. These molecules exhibit a greater tendency to allow potassium to flow into the cell rather than out of it. Cloning and characterization of an inward rectifier gene has so far been successful. It is sugggested that potassium channels consist of a potassium-selective pore flanked by two membrane-spanning regions and large cytoplasmic amino-terminal and carboxy-terminal domains. Moreover, the mechanism of rectification seems to be instantaneous, with no increase in probability occuring during a hyperpolarizing voltage step.

Regulation of NMDA receptor phosphorylation by alternative splicing of the C-terminal domain
Article Abstract:
An examination of the phosphorylation of the N-methyl D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor subunit NMFST1 (NR1) by protein kinase C (PKC) shows that the alternative splicing of the NR1 messenger RNA regulates its phosphorylation and mRNA splicing is a new method for controlling the sensitivity of glutamate receptors to protein phosphorylation. The process was studied in cells temporarily showing recombinant NR1 and in primary cultures of cortical neurons. The results also show that the NR1 proteins C-terminal is located intracellularly.

Nuclear reprogramming and pluripotency
Article Abstract:
The different strategies used to induce conversion of a differentiated cell into an embryonic pluripotent state, including nuclear transfer, cellular fusion, the use of cell extracts and culture induced programming are discussed. The efforts should aim to dissect reprogramming at the molecular and biochemical levels as reprogramming remains largely phenomenological.
