A plan to create $3-billion public fund to advance research on human stem cell in California was backed by the California voters as the 59-year old entrepreneur Bob Klein convinced them. Bob Klein in February 2005 expressed that his first goal is to approve the first grants for the research in May but, as of 7th April 2005, he and his supporters were struggling with the practical realities to build California Institute for Regenerative Medicine from scratch.

Heantos, a cocktail of herbal extracts, is used to treat Vietnamese opium addicts, which makes withdrawal tolerable and, in the longer term, reduces the craving for drugs. From its crude beginnings as thick brown syrup, Heantos has been refined into a series of subtly different formulations, given at different stages of detoxification and recovery.

Vietnam suffered heavily from H5N1 avian influenza virus in 2004, which caused severe respiratory problems. The impact of the outbreak, the problems faced by the local researchers while taking preventive measures and the lack of resources to curb the outbreak, is discussed.
