Agonistic screams and the classification of dominance relationships: are monkeys fuzzy logicians?
Article Abstract:
Scream vocalizations in rhesus macaques were investigated in terms of their classification in dominance relationships. Such vocalizations were found to be important in eliciting support from the caller's group allies. Results showed that noisy screams were most likely to be given during encounters that involved contact aggression while tonal screams were most likely for non-contact aggression. These suggested that a fuzzy or a multi-valued logic system might conceptualize the categorization of some referents of monkey vocalizations.

Agonistic screams differ among four species of macaques: The significance of motivation-structural rules
Article Abstract:
The screams of four species of macaques were compared using discriminant function analysis to determine if the 400 vocalizations could be assigned to the correct caller species. A general correspondence was found between the acoustic structure predicted by Morton's motivation-structural rules, and inferences concerning the internal state of the vocalizer.
