Factors influencing the dynamics of occurrence of the hazel grouse in a fine-grained managed landscape
Article Abstract:
Hazel grouse dynamics and patterns of occurrence can be predicted by monitoring several factors. Applied to a fine-grained managed landscape, the method assesses extinction, colonization, recolonization, density, vegetation, isolation, location and patch size. Of these factors, patch size is the most important predictability variable, followed by isolation. This method yields more accurate results than coarse-grained landscapes that are more intensively managed.

Extinction thresholds for species in fractal landscapes
Article Abstract:
Limited demographic potential is a significant consideration in developing conservation policies. Fragmented habitats can result in interference with dispersal success, reproductive output and inbreeding, all of which can create extinction thresholds lower than those that would exist in non-fractal habitats. Conservation efforts should therefore focus on increasing demographic potential for endangered species.

Functional equivalency between rice fields and seminatural wetland habitats
Article Abstract:
Results indicate that flooded rice fields can serve as foraging habitat to seminatural wetlands frequented by waterbirds. Data suggest that the agricultural land can provide valuable habitat for waterbirds.
