Al Gore's future: a science-minded politician has appeared on the Democrats' ticket for the US election - in the nick of time
Article Abstract:
Senator Albert Gore's selection as the Democratic candidate for vice-president means that a politician knowledgeable about science has a chance for national office. Gore's years in the House and the Senate show that he has a remarkably detailed grasp of issues such as genetic engineering. However, pressure on Gore to carry out the vice-presidential candidate's usual role of attacking the other party's candidates will probably leave him with little time to speak out on science. Gore's running mate, Bill Clinton, has promised to give Gore wide influence on scientific matters if they are elected.

Confidentiality of academy panel challenged by environmentalists
Article Abstract:
The Natural Resources Defense Council, Western States Legal Foundation and Tri-Valley Citizens Against a Radioactive Environment have filed a lawsuit to stop the construction of a nuclear weapons research facility at California's Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The environmental groups argue that the panel of scientists that advised the Dept. of Energy on the project may have violated the Federal Advisory Committee Act, which mandates all advisors to the government to make a public disclosure of any advice they provide.

Gore announces boost for neutron research at Oak Ridge lab
Article Abstract:
The US vice-president Al Gore has announced financial allocations for enhancing neutron research at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The government will ask Congress for 23 million dollars in the fiscal year 1998 for a research on a new source of neutron in the ORNL. Ten million dollars will be granted for improving the High Flux Isotope reactor, and its neutron scattering capabilities. These funds provide incentives for upgrading and expanding neutron research projects.
