The giant diatom dump
Article Abstract:
Issues are presented concerning the role played by large diatoms in the biogeochemistry of the oceans. The study of large diatoms to discover fluctuations in past climatic regimes is discussed.

Aldehyde suppression of copepod recruitment in blooms of a ubiquitous planktonic diatom
Article Abstract:
A negative effect of diets of various diatom species on copepod egg hatching success has been experimentally demonstrated. Competition between defended and harmful species is because not all bloom farming species produce aldehydes, and could explain the complex oscillations between diatom and copepod populations.

Diatoms and the silicate factor
Article Abstract:
The net increase in organic matter by phytoplankton throughout most of the ocean is controlled by the availability of nitrate in the surface layer. Phytoplankton biomass stays low in high-nitrate, low-chlorophyll regions, but there is also evidence that iron availability limits phytoplankton production. Dugdale and Wilkerson have also shown that dissolve silica has a function and the limitation is due to the monopolization of ne production by diatoms, in the equatorial upwelling zone (EUZ).
