Issues are presented concerning the occurrence of cell suicide in the developmental and adult stages of multicellular organisms. The reasons for cell death and the health problems associated with alterations in the rates of cell death are discussed.

The tyrosine kinase c-Abl regulates p73 in apoptotic response to cisplatin-induced DNA damage

Article Abstract:

An evaluation of the role of p73, a p53-related gene, in DNA-damage-induced apoptosis has used cisplatin (cis-diam-minedichloroplatinum (II)) as a damage inducer as it can kill most cell types. It was established that the amount of p73 protein in the cell is boosted by cisplatin. Distinct mechanisms regulate p73 and p53, with p53 being induced by a range of DNA-damaging agents while p73 is induced by cisplatin but not by ultraviolet radiation.
