Alliances and reproductive success in Camargue stallions
Article Abstract:
Research among horses in the Camargue region of France has shown that dominant and subordinate stallions can form alliances with each other which include protecting their harem together. The subordinate stallions can increase their chance of breeding success in this way, and the dominant stallions gain from not having to fight off enemies to such an extent. The foals also have a better survival rate. Both stallions contribute to the alliance and the arrangement fulfils conditions for reciprocity.

Acoustic interference limits call detection in a neotropical frog
Article Abstract:
Continuuous background noise can affect the ability of Hyla ebraccata, a Neotropical frog, to detect calls. The experiment used both correlated and uncorrelated noise. Interference may come from the call of another species that is similar and that breeds in the same location at the same time. Female frogs have to travel around a chorus to sample males, and this may increase the cost to her of selecting a mate. Chorus noise can affect female frogs' ability to select mates.
