Alternative ways of meeting demand

Article Abstract:

It seems likely that demand for organ transplants, which is already very high, will rise further. At the same time, a drop in traffic accidents has led to a decline in the number of organs available. This problem can be partly resolved by policy initiatives such as encouraging more donations, but it is widely accepted that only science will ultimately be able to resolve this issue. Areas of research include xenotransplantation and improving the success rate of transplant operations.

Remote measurements of volcanic gas compositions by solar occultation spectroscopy

Article Abstract:

Volcanic gases have significant effects on the atmosphere and climate but are problematical to measure. Remote techniques such as correlation spectroscopy are widely used for the measurement of sulphur dioxide. Fourier-transform infrared observations of volcanic plume compositions at Mount Etna are reported. Solar occultation spectroscopy allows plume composition measurement without the need for hot rocks or lamp sources.
