An experimental replication of upper-mantle metasomatism
Article Abstract:
An analysis of the mechanism by which the lithosphere acquires distinctive isotopic and trace elements reveals that the reaction of Group I kimberlites with refractory peridotite causes the formation of these elements. The investigation was performed using the reaction of a low volume partial melt of Group I kimberlite from asthenosphere to a harzburgite in a thermal gradient at high pressure. The environment in which the reaction occurs is similar to that in the lower lithosphere. The reaction yields the same isotopic and trace elements found in the lithosphere.

Redox evolution of a degassing magma rising to the surface
Article Abstract:
A study uses a coupled chemical-physical model of conduit flow to show that the amount of gas in the reservoir is dependent on the redox state evolution of an ascending magma. The results indicate that the redox state of erupted magmas is not necessarily a good proxy of the redox state of gases they emit because of the difference, which could be as much as 1.5 log units, between oxygen fugacity in the reservoir and at the exit of the volcanic conduit.

Evidence for mantle metasomatism by hydrous silicic melts derived from subducted oceanic crust
Article Abstract:
Research is presented concerning the melting of basalt under low-temperature and water-added conditions which can result in the formation of highly alkali-rich silicic liquids. The interaction of the liquids with mantle olivine is discussed.
