Aposematic coloration enhances chemosensory recognition of noxious prey in the garter snake Thamnophis radix
Article Abstract:
Aposematic coloration increases chemosensory cognition and disinclination to distasteful prey takes place more rapidly in garter snakes if the prey has a conspicuous complexion, even though identification of unpalatable prey is due to the prey's chemosensory qualities rather than its coloration. Further reaction to distasteful prey is affected by the complex interaction between visual and chemosensory information gained during the initial encounter.

Prior exposure to prey cues influences chemical prey preference and prey choice in neonatal garter snakes
Article Abstract:
Early exposure to prey odors influences food choice in garter snakes. Neonatal garter snakes were exposed to specific prey odors and their subsequent prey preferences was tested. Results indicated that chemical cues have a strong influence on foraging and early exposure to a particular chemical odor resulted in habituation to the prey to which that odor belonged. Independent mechanisms are involved in recognition of different odors.

The interaction of food motivation and experience in the ontogeny of chemoreception in crayfish snakes
Article Abstract:
The species Regina septemvittata and R. grahamii of crayfish snake are analyzed to compare the effect of the availability of their preferred prey, freshly moulted crayfish, on the ontogeny of chemosensory response towards different prey types. The results provide a major confirmation that the two species are born with chemosensory prey preferences that reflect their specialized diets.
