Attack on Japan's engineering education
Article Abstract:
There are differences between Japanese companies and universities in goals for education in engineering, according to Takeshi Owa, chief fellow at Toshiba Research and Development Centre. Companies are seeking extremely well trained engineers with technical abilities, while universities are looking to create researchers. Japan's Ministry of International Trade and Industry and the Japan Federation of Economic Organizations have already linked with the Japanese Society for Engineering Education and the Japan Federation of Engineering Societies to consider ways of boosting the standard of university engineering and technology departments.

Industrial links still face opposition in Japan's universities: Japan has traditionally had poor links between universities and industry. The government hopes to change this
Article Abstract:
The Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) in Japan is to support venture businesses with a fund of 50 billion yen, as part of the government's attempts to improve links between universities and industry. However researchers at national universities are currently forbidden by law from becoming involved in profit-making activities, and Japanese universities are traditionally conservative in their attitudes towards such activities.

Japan to try to understand quakes, not predict them
Article Abstract:
A research plan into earthquakes in Japan by the Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion (HERP) aims to shape earthquake research and influence projects at national research institutes. There is a growing feeling that successful earthquake prediction may not be realistic and that earthquake research should try to understand the scientific mechanisms behind earthquakes.
