Backing for anti-cloning bill reopens embryo debate
Article Abstract:
Some observers feel that the decision by the science committee of the US House of Representatives to support an anti-cloning bill substantially redrafted to ban the cloning of human embryos will needlessly revive discussions about human embryo research. They also believe that beneficial research based on cloning technology but not designed to produce cloned humans could be negatively affected. Vernon Ehlers, who presented the bill, believes that it will protect biomedical research by pre-empting wider-reaching bills which could bring about a ban on cloning in all research.

Seed sows further doubts on cloning: Plans by a Chicago embryologist to clone a human being have renewed pressure for swift action to ban the practice in the United States
Article Abstract:
The announcement by Richard See, a physicist, of plans to clone a human being, has renewed pressure for action to ban the practice in the US. Secretary of Health and Human Services, Donna Shlala, stated that Seed 'will not do human cloning in this country', and President Bill Clinton claimed that Seed's announcement was 'profoundly troubling', and called for legislation to be enacted. Some scientific groups fear that broadly worded and imprecise legislation would threaten research.

US biologists adopt cloning moratorium
Article Abstract:
The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology, representing over 52,000 scientists, has approved a moratorium on the cloning of human beings. However, the voluntary, five-year agreement seeks to keep open the possibility of allowing human embryo research. The federation says that it regards cloning humans as reprehensible and unethical.
