Bacterial templating of ordered macrostructures in silica and silica-surfactant mesophases
Article Abstract:
The expansion of the length scale of inorganic materials patterning is demonstrated using a bacterial superstructure comprised of a thread of coaligned multicellular filaments of Bacillus subtilis. Ordered macroporous fibers of either ordered mesoporous silica or amorphous silica are generated by template-directed mineralization of the interfilament spaces and by heating to 600 degrees centigrade to eliminate organic material. It is suggested that it is possible to combine supramolecular and supercellular templates to fabricate inorganic materials with structural hierarchy.

Template mineralization of self-assembled anisotropic lipid microstructures
Article Abstract:
The production of mineral-containing fibres and other ceramic-organic composites may be possible through the use of chemically modified sugar-based lipids. Research shows that self-assembled lipid tubules can be used as templates for the crystallization of inorganic oxides. An anionic sulphate derivative can be used to dope sugar-based lipid galactocerebroside microstructures in inducing the nucleation of magnetic and non-magnetic iron oxides. Both tube-like and lamellar disk-like composites can be created under specific conditions.

Fabrication of hollow porous shells of calcium carbonate from self-organizing media
Article Abstract:
The synthesis of crystalline calcium carbonate (aragonite) to form hollow porous shells that are similar to the coccospheres of some marine algae can be achieved by swift mineralization of aragonite using self-organizing foam droplets as a structural template. The synthetic reproduction of complex, three-dimensional structures, which are exhibited by inorganic materials in nature, could be useful in light-weight ceramics.
