A guide to ballots in US states on animal welfare issues is presented. A variety of practices such as cockfighting, greyhound racing, wolf hunting, use of traps and poisons, and the right to hunt and fish, will be decided.

Ballots overtaking bullets: putting the initiative process to work for wildlife
Article Abstract:
Animal advocates are working to reform wildlife policies by putting issues directly to the voters. They are bypassing state fish and game commissions because these agencies have long been under the control of hunters and trappers.

Animal advocates scored a big win during the Nov 3, 1998 elections. Voters in nine states approved seven of 11 campaigned animal protection reforms. These include laws banning the use body-gripping traps, commercial sale of horse meat and cockfighting.
