Basic science and applied science instruction: Are they compatible?
Article Abstract:
The necessity and interdependence of basic and applied science instruction for professional success and the advancement of knowledge are indisputable. Basic research provides the raw material for the fundamental understanding of biologic phenomena. Applied science provides the measure of utility for basic research findings, often in totally unrelated areas. However, the viability of animal science programs not only rests upon quality curricula, but also on the caliber of its students. Developing the proper attitudes and a lifelong commitment to learning in these students will help ensure the continuity of progress in the field.

Modernizing the animal science curriculum: Is change needed?
Article Abstract:
The animal science curriculum needs to undergo continual change in order to meet the demands of society. The curriculum as a basis for the study or career track needs to be modified in the light of the program's ultimate goal and its responsiveness to student needs, as well as external demands. Certain guidelines for ensuring curriculum quality are presented, such as enforcement of prerequisite requirements, keeping the faculty up to date regarding recent developments in the field, requiring students to undergo internship or present a thesis, and a national examination, among others.
