Behavioural risk factors in the reproduction of inbred and outbred oldfield mice
Article Abstract:
A study of breeding success in oldfield mice, and the impact of inbreeding shows that inbred mice tend to produce a first litter later and have less of a chance of producing a litter. This occurs whether or not the offspring of the union will be inbred, or whether the mice are related to partners. Inbred mice are less likely to be active and active mice are more likely to have pups that survive. Inbreeding thus appears to affect behaviour. This study has implications for breeding programs.

Relationships among parental inbreeding, parental behavior and offspring viability in oldfield mice
Article Abstract:
The effects of parental inbreeding on the parental behavior and breeding success of the filial generation were investigated among oldfield mice, Peromyscus polionotus. Parental inbreeding did not affect maternal behavior among oldfield mice dams but significantly reduced paternal contribution to litter care. Further, inbred females had less reproductive success than did outbred dams. A physiologic basis for these findings is presented.

Effects of early experience on subsequent parental behaviour and reproductive success in oldfield mice, Peromyscus polionotus
Article Abstract:
The effect of the early experience with sibling pups during the subadult on later maternal behaviour and reproductive success in oldfield mice is examined. Inexperienced mates of experienced females reveal improved nest building and showed that parental care tends to match that of mates.
