Between Stockholm and Rio
Article Abstract:
The years between the first international conference on the environment in 1972 and the 1992 Rio conference have not been marked by global environmental protection, but awareness has been raised and scientists have more information. There are many problems facing international environmental conservation such as the choice between environmental concerns and helping poverty in undeveloped countries. Poor countries are likely to choose quick economic development over sustainable development and many richer countries must make policy decisions based on public opinion.

Last-chance zoo?
Article Abstract:
The London Zoo has announced a plan for the 'zoo of the future' intended to save it from the financial ruin that has threatened in the 1990s. The Emir of Kuwait has made a seven-figure donation in recognition of Britain's aid in the Gulf War that will be used to finance fund-raising and development projects. The new plan includes installation of a 'World of Invertebrates' exhibit which the directors plan to couple with an emphasis on conservation and education.
