London Zoo crippled by misjudgement
Article Abstract:
The Zoological Society of London's mismanagement has forced it to declare that the London Zoo will close in Sep 1992. This unfortunate decision, which will deny the public a much-needed source of information on zoology, is largely the result of the Society's use of a 10 million pounds sterling government grant to enhance the zoo's commercial appeal rather than to shore up public support. It is to be hoped that this misguided venture into market economics will not endanger the Society's other zoos and that the London Zoo will be saved in some form.

The zoo that has to close
Article Abstract:
The Zoological Society of London's plan to close the Regent's Park site of the London Zoo in Sep 1992 is largely the result of the Society's financial mismanagement. The Society began receiving government aid in 1964. Rising costs and declining attendance caused the zoo's finances to deteriorate steadily from 1980 to 1983. Although the British government tried to improve the situation by granting the Society 10 million pounds sterling in 1988, the society squandered the money on a misguided effort to promote the zoo as a commercial enterprise.

Keeping zoos alive
Article Abstract:
Management of the London Zoo must be revitalized if it is to survive. The London Zoological Society, of which the zoo is a subsidiary, must use foresight and imagination to avert closure permanently. This requires above all managers who will approach their task with zest and determination. More specifically, two promising tactics for boosting patronage would be to offer membership to the public and to stimulate interest in zoology by inviting travellers to remote regions to speak at the zoo.
