Big planets and little stars
Article Abstract:
The dedicated 1.2-metre telescope at the European Southern Observatory in Chile means the prospects of finding more extrasolar planets and brown dwarf stars are good. It is uncertain whether extrasolar planets and brown dwarf stars will be similar to Jupiter's bands. Such rapidly rotating objects may transport energy to their atmospheres via thermal convection from the cooling interior, which is influenced by rapid rotation.

The optical counterparts of gamma-ray bursts
Article Abstract:
Astronomers have puzzled about the origin of gamma-ray bursts (GRB) for 25 years. New events have been discovered since 1991, at the rate of around one a day, although objects responsible for the outbursts could not be identified. GRBs can now be rapidly and accurately located since the launch of the BeppoSAX satellite in 1996. This has been followed by discoveries of x-ray and optical counterparts.

An asteroidal companion to the Earth
Article Abstract:
Asteroid 3753 is the only near-earth asteroid that is a dynamical companion to the Earth and follows a horseshoe orbit around the Sun. While the asteroid has a different orbit to the Earth, the object's dynamics are tightly controlled by the Earth's gravitational pull. The asteroid's unusual, eccentric orbit means that a collision with the Earth is unlikely in the foreseeable future.
