Biological basis of grooming behavior in antelope: the body-size, vigilance and habitat principles
Article Abstract:
Grooming behavior in ungulates is controlled by the central nervous system and influenced by factors such as species identification, area in which animals are living and social group within the species. Grooming is directed towards removal of ectoparasites and is influenced by body size and vigilance principle. A comparative study on the grooming behavior of Thompson's gazellle, Grant's gazelle, impala and wildebeest was conducted and results indicated that within a particular species animals in low parasite environment groomed less than those in the high parasite environment.

Reciprocal allogrooming in impala, Aepyceros melampus
Article Abstract:
The allogrooming system of the impala (Aepyceros melampus) is investigated. Resultsshow that impala females, bachelor males and subadult males regularly display the basic pattern of allogrooming. Generally, two individuals will turn towardseach other and exchange in a tit-for-tat-like fashion, a number of oral grooming bouts to the head and neck. This behavior is a means of removing ectoparasites from parts of the body the animal cannot reach with its own mouth. Lastly, impala allogrooming is seen as evolved cooperation.
