NIH lends a hand with loan repayment
Article Abstract:
The loan repayment program (LRP) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) is an incentive to MDs and PhDs to enter the institutes' research programs. The first LRP was implemented in 1989 and expanded in 1994. The LRP is available only to US citizens, national or permanent residents. Those awarded the loan must owe more than 20% of their annual NIH salary and commit themselves to working at the NIH for at least two years. The LRP has proved useful in recruiting and retraining MDs, and retaining researchers in the AIDS research project.

Primer prediction and selection capabilities for the polymerase chain reaction and sequencing applications have been added to the new 4.0 version of MacVector sequence analysis software
Article Abstract:
International Biotechnologies Inc has inroduced MacVector version 4.0, a sequence analysis software. It is available with Assembly LIGN, a sequence assembly and editing software. MacVector version 4.0's capabilities include DNA fragment amplification by searching for appropriate primer pairs according to product size or the region in which they occur. It lists the numbers of primers and primer pairs that it has considered, accepted and rejected. It can also calculate the melting temperature using the nearest neighbor method.
