Bite the mother, fight the daughter
Article Abstract:
Research involving water fleas and radish plants indicates that predator-activated responses play a role in allowing the victims to survive an attack. It is possible for these defences to be transmitted from an organism to its offspring. This is the first time that induced defence has been found to spread across generations. In both the water flea and wild radish, the dangers of a young individual's first meeting with predators can be cut by the experiences of their parents.

Fitness costs of resource overlap among coexisting bird species
Article Abstract:
Natural selection has been perceived to be partial toward differences in resource partitioning among species because fitness costs are incurred when overlaps occur. However, fitness costs of overlap at the individual level has not been demonstrated by studies of resource partitioning in animal systems. Manipulative and observational tests showing individual-level fitness costs of resource overlap are presented.
