Black-capped chickadee call dialects along a continuous habitat corridor
Article Abstract:
Gargle dialects in black-capped chickadees, Poecile atricapillus, seem to result from isolation by distance in continuous habitat. The gargle-call dialects become more dissimilar as the populations become further apart. Gargles appear to be learned vocalizations, and this distribution pattern may therefore occur as a result of inaccurate copying or innovations in gargle production which could be transferred locally to other birds. It is still necessary to establish whether there is a sensitive phase for learning the gargle call.

Depauperate meme pool of vocal signals in an island population of singing honeyeaters
Article Abstract:
There are many structural differences among the songs of the singing honeyeater, Meliphaga virescens, population on the Rottnest Island and mainland of Western Australia. The island population has fewer varieties of singing sounds in comparison with birds living on the mainland. The island population has fewer song types, syllable types, total syllables, and note per song compared to the mainland population. Founder effect is responsible for a reduction of the meme pool of the island birds.
