Magma mixing by convective entrainment
Article Abstract:
The injection of basaltic liquid into the silicic magma chamber of volcanoes produces a thermal plume, which drags the basaltic liquid to the top of the chamber through viscous coupling. The upward movement causes mixing of the liquids in the localized areas without influencing the bulk of the chamber. Convection regulates the viscous coupling mechanism.

Magma does the splits
Article Abstract:
A minor volcanic eruption in Ethiopia revealed a massive injection of magma along the Afar rift in 2005. The exact course of these events were studied to analyze early continental break-up, and it was found that 'dyking' caused by magma flow split the crust laterally, relieving tensional stress caused by plate divergence.
