Breeder plans are dented as thermal reactor support falls
Article Abstract:
Nine members of the Japanese Federation of Electric Power Companies have asked the government not to build a demonstration advanced thermal reactor (ATR) intended to pave the way for the plans to build a commercial fast breeder reactor (FBR), owing to the high costs involved. Instead, the members propose a cheaper conventional light-water reactor which will also use reprocessed fuel-source plutonium and can generate over twice the power. The light-water reactor also costs less than one-third to produce a kilowatt of energy when compared to the proposed 606-MW ATR at an estimated 580 billion yens.

Sodium leak blots Japan's nuclear prospects
Article Abstract:
A liquid sodium leak at Monju, a fast breeder reactor in Japan, has put the country's nuclear plans on temporary hold. Since the leak came from a fracture in one of many thermal probes in the sodium cooling system, the reactor is likely to face several years of shutdown for redesign and repairs. However, the public was much more angered over reports that the Power Reactor and Nuclear Fuel Development Corp. prevented the media from seeing revealing video footages taken hours after the incident. The Japanese are particularly against the use of plutonium in any kind of reactor.
