Brood parasitism in the sand martin, Riparia riparia: evidence for two parasitic strategies in a colonial passerine
Article Abstract:
Brood parasitism in a sand martin colony in central Scotland, consisting of 45 broods and 167 nestlings, was investigated. Multilocus DNA fingerprinting was used to examine the frequency of monogamy, quasiparasitism (QP), intraspecific brood parasitism and extrapair fertilization (EPF). Both QP and EPF were found to result in multiple parentage within nests. The observed frequency may be due to a female-driven strategy.
