Protests of the annual pigeon shoot at Hegins, Pennsylvania had ceased but the Taksel and Hindis family brought new vigour to it in 1990. Steve Hindi and his family and the Taksel family, Rebecca, Joe, and Meyer are animal rights activists who are against the contest.

Fifteen out of 36 dogs died in Lonnie Dupre's 3,250-mile dog sled journey because Dupre did not bring enough dog food. The deaths spurred public protest against sled dog racing and long-distance trekking.
