Fermilab faces up to uncertain future
Article Abstract:
The Fermi National Laboratory (Fermilab) has an exciting future in the short-term but challenges lie ahead to secure its stability in the long-term. Fermilab's leading role in high-energy physics research will be overtaken by rival particle physics European laboratory CERN's Large Hadron Collider project by 2006. Fermilab director John Peoples will retire in 1999. His successor needs to set up long-term goals for continued assurance of government investment.

Senate baulks at cost of collider project
Article Abstract:
The US Senate may abandon the Next Linear Collider (NLC) that high energy physicists want to see built, as the project could cost up to $7.9 billion. The Senate wants NLC research costs to be reduced to $6 million with the intention of ending funding altogether over two years, to minimize disruption. This is despite receiving a favourable review of the project together with a cost estimate.
