Article Abstract:
The German government has started an 'excellence initiative' that will reward universities with particularly convincing concepts in collaborative research and postgraduating training in order to establish the German research institute in the top global tier. The competition has forced every university to look into their strengths and weaknesses and it will also help them nurture promising areas of research and develop necessary collaborations across disciplines.
