The lupine and the butterfly
Article Abstract:
The ecological changes that have caused a decrease in the habitat of wild lupine, Lupinus perennis, have led to a 99% decline in the numbers of the Karner blue butterfly, Lycaeides melissa samuelis. The butterfly is dependent upon the wild lupine plant for food, and ants provide some kind of protection to the larva that feeds on the plant leaves. The surviving populations of the species are widely scattered in the northern US and the Province of Ontario. Management efforts need to conserve oak savanna and pine barren habitats, where these butterflies are usually found.
