Cash-strapped research ship must earn its living
Article Abstract:
The Japanese research ship Chikyu, built to lead the Integrated Ocean Drilling Project (IODP) in probing seismic zones of the sea floor is due to start in September 2007. However, the escalated costs of operating the ship due to high oil prices has led the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology (JAMSTEC) to allow it to work in an oil exploration project for nine months from November 2006, as the agency tries to obtain extra funding from the Japanese government.
