Causes of insulin resistance
Article Abstract:
Overexpression of a plasma membrane glycoprotein called PC-1 that inhibits insulin-receptor kinase activity, is associated with insulin resistance in non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) patients. Fibroblasts and skeletal muscles of patients with NIDDM also comprise of high levels of PC-1. Transfection of breast carcinoma cells with PC-1 decreases insulin-activated mitogenesis.

Transferrin receptor 1 is a cellular receptor for New World haemorrhagic fever arenaviruses
Article Abstract:
A specific, high-affinity association between transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1) and the entry glycoprotein (GP) of Machupo virus is examined. The iron depletion of culture medium increased and iron supplementation decreased the efficiency of infection by Junin and Machupo but not Lassa pseudoviruses, indicating that TfR1 is a cellular receptor for New World haemorrhagic fever arenaviruses.

RNA molecules stimulate prion protein conversion
Article Abstract:
Research reveals that the conversion of the glycoprotein PrP(sup)C to PrPres and its amplification is mediated by RNA in mammals. Data indicate that host-encoded stimulatory RNA molecules may be involved in the development of prion disease.
