Chaos and threshold for irreversibility in sheared suspensions
Article Abstract:
An experiment showing precisely how time reversibility fails for slowly sheared suspensions is presented. By comparing experimental and numerical results, the threshold strain associated with a pronounced growth in the Lyapunov exponent is demonstrated and the comparison also illuminates the connections between chaos, reversibility and predictability.

Persistent patterns in transient chaotic fluid mixing
Article Abstract:
A 2-dimensional fluid layer, electromagnetically powered, is used to investigate advective stretching of fluids and molecular diffusion. The experiment shows that chaotic mixing, resulting from time-periodic cellular flows, produces an extraordinary persistent spatial structure, with a surprisingly recurrent pattern.

Chaos in space and time
Article Abstract:
Chaotic space and time variations of a heated fluid have been investigated using a nonlinear dynamics method that could ultimately be applied to natural systems, such as the weather.
