Charles M. Russell/ UL Blend National Wildlife Refuges
Article Abstract:
Both Charles M. Russell (CMR) National Wildlife Refuge (NWR), located in north-central Montana, and UL Bend NWR, which is surrounded by CMR, provide shelter for a wide range of prairie species, some of which are endangered. Among them is the elusive black-footed ferret which spends most of its time in underground burrows. A capture and propagation program was begun in the 1980s and first reintroductions of kits occurred in 1994. Additionally, as part of the management strategy, a full-scale program to de-flea the prairie dogs, upon which they ferrets rely heavily for food, has been undertaken to rid the prey of a potentially fatal bacterium which is spread by fleas.

A survey on endangered species in National Wildlife Refuges
Article Abstract:
The National Wildlife Refuge System (NWR) plays a major role in the conservation of threatened wildlife and has developed a network of 487 units across the US, encompassing 90 million acres of land and water. The refuge managers collect information on the size of the refuge, the species protected, the habitat of various species and the hazards faced by them. Human activities such as agricultural run-off, pesticides, soil erosion, water pollution and alteration of the natural landscape affect the wildlife and pose a challenge to the refuge

Tracking contaminants in fish, wildlife and on refuges with the BEST program
Article Abstract:
The US Fish and Wild Service (USFWS) has started the Biomonitoring of Environmental Status and Trends (BEST) Program, which uses an extensive eco-based approach to highlight the effects and consequences of pollutants. The BEST Program aims to provide information on conservation to refuge managers and review factors that affect aquatic creatures and wildlife, using ecological surveys, biomarkers, residue analysis and toxicity tests.
