Article Abstract:
The neurochemical events associated with alcohol abuse are ill understood but studies of rats suggest that neuropeptide Y (NPY) is implicated. A new study of mice confirms that levels of NPY, which is a neuromodulator that promotes feeding, reduces anxious behaviour and enables the effect of some drugs, are inversely related to alcohol consumption and resistance to its effects. Mice lacking NPY have been found to consume more alcohol than normal mice, while mice with an overexpression of NPY prefer not to drink alcohol and are more sensitive to its effects.

Finding homes at synapses
Article Abstract:
The brain uses synapses to process and store information. Two families of receptors in the postsynaptic cell are activated by glutamates, but the function of a third type of glutamate receptors is unknown. A new study is presented that shows a new biology for kainate receptors at central synapses. It is observed, using GluR5-selective agonists, that the activation of kainate receptors inhibits the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid.
