Checkpoint on the nuclear frontier
Article Abstract:
The focus of cell-cycle research has been mainly on the regulation of the cell cycle by time. Evidence is emerging that the cell cycle is controlled through the localization of specific regulators and such an example is reported by Paul Russell and colleagues. They have shown that the Cdc25 phosphatase in the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe, is exported from the nucleus in response to DNA damage. The study shows how the spatial dimension contributes to the control of the cell cycle and emphasizes the importance of controlled nuclear import and export.

Cell-cycle related regulation of poly(A) polymerase by phosphorylation
Article Abstract:
The maturation/mitosis-promoting factor, MPF phosphorylates the Poly(A) polymerase (PAP) both in vivo and in vitro. This results in hyperphosphorylated PAP during meiotic maturation of Xenopus oocytes and arresting of HeLa cells in M phase. The MPF-induced hyperphosphorylation reduces the activity of purified PAP and inhibits PAP isolated from mitotic HeLa cells. This repression causes a reduction in poly(A)+ RNA and protein synthesis that occurrs in the HeLa M phase cells.

A licence to replicate
Article Abstract:
Three new studies of DNA replication have shed new light on the study of replication by proving the existence of a replication licensing factor. J.J. Blow and R.A. Laskey had speculated on the existence of a replication licensing factor in 1988 to explain why replication occurs only once in each cell cycle in eukaryotic cells. The results of the three experiments are positive proof of the role of the licensing factor in the regulation of DNA replication.
