Stirrings of the galactic heart
Article Abstract:
The latest radial velocity data and direct measurements of the proper motion of stars near the Galactic Center show that some 2.5 million solar masses of dark matter is concentrated within a relatively small region. The dark mass is confined within a tenth of light year away from a bright, unresolved radio source designated Sagittarius A, which astronomers believe to be the largest black hole in the galaxy.

Photons from a hotter hell
Article Abstract:
Astronomers have reported the detection of powerful bursts of teraelectrovolt (TeV) gamma-rays lasting just minutes, which is the shortest time ever observed. The sources of these powerful bursts are two 'blazars', which are the black holes of more than 100 million solar masses that signal their presence through jets of charged particles emitted at almost the speed of light.

The inner edge of the accretion disk around a supermassive black hole
Article Abstract:
Massive black holes are believed to exist at the centres of galaxies. A broad iron emission line was discovered some years ago, in the active MCG-6-30-15 galaxy, indicating emissions from an accretion disk close to the event horizon of a black hole. An analysis of the iron-line emission from MCG-6-30-15 is presented, which is insensitive to details of the disk model.
