China focuses research efforts on grain production
Article Abstract:
China's five-year research program centers on increasing grain production through higher crop yields. The crucial factor in falling grain production is the use of outdated technology. The government has undertaken to modernize farming methods through the application of science and technology, such as developing crossbreeds of grain. However, much of the effort is unscientific and lacks a proper focus. With forecasts of massive shortfalls in grain output by the year 2000, research efforts in this direction have acquired greater urgency.

Softening of nanocrystalline metals at very small grain sizes
Article Abstract:
Nanocrystalline samples were constructed to simulate the behaviour of nanocrystalline metals. A slow uniaxial deformation is the main part of the simulation, minimizing energy with regard to atomic coordinates. The simulation cell is expanded in one direction, with the size allowed to relax in the perpendicular directions. The experiment shows how grain boundaries become thicker, suggesting significant activity. The stacking faults are a signature of dislocation activity in the grains.

The soil production function and landscape equilibrium
Article Abstract:
Two independent field methods to determine soil production rates to northern Californian hillslopes are described. The methods show variations of hillslope curvature with soil depth, and the exponential decline of soil production rates with increasing soil depth are calculated. The results yield the first empirical soil production function, and the methods also offer a way of determining whether a landscape is in morphological equilibrium.
