Chip-making equipment industry warns of threat from Intel deal
Article Abstract:
The US semiconductor industry is concerned about the Cooperative Research and Development Agreement struck between the Department of Energy and Intel. An Intel-led consortium will supply $250 million of cash and support to three laboratories over three years to develop the use of extreme ultraviolet lithography for etching microcircuits in silicon. The semiconductor industry fears that its Japanese competitors will gain US technology as a result of the deal. Congressional staff are also concerned about some aspects of the deal.

Top physics labs 'must bury the hatchet'
Article Abstract:
Michael Witherell, a physicist at the University of California at Santa Barbara, has become director of Fermilab, the high-energy physics laboratory. Witherall has the challenge of reviving the high-energy physics community which is still recovering from the cancellation of the Superconducting SuperCollider in 1993. He feels that the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center (SLAC) in California and Fermilab should work together and bury their traditional rivalry.
